DAVID RAKOWSKI, composer
David
Rakowski is a widely performed and awarded composer whose music is known for
its balance between formal rigor and visceral surface, and for its brilliant
scoring, rhythmic vitality, and emotional range. His compositions include
a collection of more than 60 widely varied etudes for piano, concerti, vocal
chamber music, and large works for strings, chamber orchestra, full orchestra,
and wind ensemble. His long list of awards includes the 2004-06 Elise L. Stoeger
Prize from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Rome Prize, and
awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the NEA, and the Fromm,
Rockefeller, Guggenheim, and Koussevitzky Foundations. In 1999 his "Persistent
Memory," commissioned by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, was a finalist
for the Pulitzer Prize; in 2002 his "Ten of a Kind," commissioned
by the United States Marine Band, was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
His music is recorded on the Albany, New World, Bridge, Innova, and Americus
labels, and is published exclusively by C.F. Peters. He is currently Professor
of Composition at Brandeis University, where he chairs the music department,
and has also held faculty positions at Stanford, Columbia and Harvard Universities,
and New England Conservatory.
Residency Statement
During this residency period, I would like to focus on broad compositional
issues as they affect the music of the Associates, and on specific compositional
issues as they relate to composition in miniature forms.
Specifically, I would hope every Associate will be prepared to present his
or her own music and how he or she thinks it relates to biographical, musical
and aesthetic issues; in addition, I would encourage the Associates be prepared
to talk about one or two of his or her favorite piano miniatures, from any
century, and what makes them work or not work. I will also encourage composers
to be ready to write fragments of miniatures for piano for commentary and
possible partial performance by pianist Amy Dissanayake, who will be in residence
a part of the time. In the remaining time, I would like Associates to speak
about other works in progress for critique in a collegial manner by the whole
group.
Application Requirements
Applicants should submit one or two scores and representative recordings,
a brief biography, and a list of five favorite pieces with explanations why. |
