MAY 19 - JUNE 8, 2008
Application Deadline: February 15, 2008
ROB PRUITT, visual artist
Internationally renowned contemporary artist Rob Pruitt skyrocketed to fame in the late 80's as half of the art team Pruitt-Early. Their celebrated bodies of work, "Artwork for Teenage Boys" and "Artwork for Teenage Girls," took art about gender politics into a radical new pop arena. At the height of their fame, Pruitt-Early presented "The Red Black Green Red White and Blue Project" at Leo Castelli Gallery, addressing the marketing of African American pop culture to the public at large. In an era of politically correct art, the show was disastrously received. Pruitt-Early split up soon after, and Pruitt disappeared from the art world for several years. In 1998, Pruitt exploded back onto the scene with "Cocaine Buffet," "101 Art Ideas You Can Do Yourself," and his wildly popular glitter paintings of panda bears. This year, Abrams Publishing will be releasing a comprehensive career monograph entitled "Low and Behold: the Art of Rob Pruitt."

RESIDENCY STATEMENT
I would like for this residency to create an environment were participants feel free to improvise and experiment outside of their comfort zones. This is what I have tried to do in my own career, through numerous collaborations, and radical shifts in projects and styles. I would like to encourage participants to share their disciplinary expertise with one another and possibly work together. I will be meeting individually with participants and conducting group critique sessions as well. It is also my interest to share practical information with the group about what it means to be an exhibiting artist, i.e., how to get your first show, how to maintain gallery relationships, and generally function within the contemporary art world establishment.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
I am looking for true individuals who I can learn things from too. You must be really motivated and committed to art making -- no dilettante, please. Please submit images in a digital format -- CD, DVD -- and an artist statement describing you, your work and your goals and ambitions.
Atlantic Center for the Arts is pleased to announce, through the generous
