Residency #134
MAY 18 – JUNE 7
Application deadline: February 6, 2009
WILL COTTON, visual arts
For the last ten years Will Cotton’s work has explored themes of overindulgence and insatiability. Drawing and painting from confectionary landscapes he builds in the studio his work often depicts an imagined utopia and it’s inhabitants.
Born in Melrose, Massachusetts and raised in New Paltz, New York, Cotton studied at the Beaux Arts in Rouen, France, the New York Academy of Art and received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Cooper Union in New York City. He has been represented by Mary Boone Gallery in New York since 1999. He has also shown with Michael Kohn Gallery in L.A, and in Europe with Galerie Jablonka in Cologne, Germany, and Daniel Templon in Paris, France. His work is in the collection of the Seattle Art Museum, and the Columbus Museum of Art. His next solo show in New York will be with Mary Boone Gallery in the spring of 2009.
Residency Statement
The working environment at ACA is deliberately unstructured, allowing artists the freedom to use their time in a way most beneficial to them. I’m interested in having an ongoing dialogue with residents and will be available for one on one and group discussions. Since my own practice has recently involved drawing the figure, I’ll be spending some of my time working from the live model and would invite anyone who’s interested to join me.
Application Requirements
This residency is open to artists working in any medium. Please submit the following for consideration:
- Up to 15 digital images.
- Video, viewable on a Mac, up to 5 minutes. (For those working in video)
- A short biography
- A brief statement describing what you’ve been working on and how you’d like to use your time at the ACA
