“Rebecca Sexton Larson: Pinhole Photography”on exhibit at Atlantic Center’s Harris House gallery
Rebecca Sexton Larson: Pinhole Photography
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 7, 4 PM – 7 PM
Exhibition Dates: April 7 - May 18, 2012
Atlantic Center for the Arts, Harris House Gallery
The darkly romantic pinhole photography works of Rebecca Sexton Larson will be on display April 7 to May 18, 2012 at Atlantic Center’s Harris House gallery in New Smyrna Beach, Fl.
“I am excited about this exhibition.” said Larson, who primarily works on the West Coast. Larson refers to her images as “autobiographical stories” composed from thoughts captured in the sketchbook she carries with her at all times.
Pinhole cameras have been in use for centuries and are modestly constructed. Rebecca builds her cameras from found objects using varied light-proof containers with a small hole in one side, and a piece of film or photographic paper secured to the other end. Without a lens and with a single small built aperture, light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box and is captured on the black and white negative film or photo paper.
To achieve the large image size, Rebecca hand sews photo paper together. She then assembles and enhances the photograph with paint, this process of allows her to “reflect on the experience” she is trying to capture.
Rebecca Sexton Larson is a Tampa based studio artist working with historic photographic processes. She graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in Fine Arts and Mass Communications. She was awarded Florida Individual Artist Fellowships in 1998, 2002, and 2008. In 2006, she received an Artist Enhancement Grant from the State of Florida and, in 2005, was commissioned by the City of Tampa to be its Photographer Laureate for a year. During the past 15 years, Sexton Larson has taught, lectured and exhibited work nationally at various arts institutions and organizations. Sexton Larson's photographs are in numerous major collections throughout the country, including: Polaroid, Progressive Corporate Art, Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), Holland and Knight Law Firm, Polk Museum of Art, and the Tampa Museum of Art.
