This year’s feature selections represent the widest range of scope in the history of our festival. With narrative diversity such as the explorations of unknown big wave adventurer, Frank James Solomon, in Let’s Be Frank, to six-year-old, Given Goodwin and his family, fulfilling their unique legacy around the world in Given, a new film by Jess Bianchi and writer Malia Mau, both in attendance.  Then, an underground, women’s big-wave movement charges the cold, massive barrels of Ocean Beach, San Francisco, in It Ain’t Pretty, a new film by Dayla Soul, who will also be in attendance.  Next, meet Brazil’s up and coming filmmaker, Gabriel Novis, and his smile-inducing cinema, Sorria.  There is something for every film fan of every surf genre.  Short films are also prominently represented through this year’s submissions, using a wide-range of filmmaking approaches and topics.

We recognize the difference between Best Traditional Documentary and Best Surf Movie.  Those who approach the art form by documenting a character, locale, etc. with personal interviews, historical footage, and anecdotal clips will be in competition for Best Traditional Documentary, and those movies focusing on the high performance, action-driven sequences will compete for Best Surf Movie. This award will be extended to short films as well. In addition, Best Cinematography and Best Soundtrack will be awarded for both feature and short films, along with a Viewers’ Choice award.
