Volunteers play an important role in helping Atlantic Center for the Arts achieve its organizational and programming goals. Members typically provide over 8,000 hours annually and, through fundraising efforts, greatly assist the organization by providing financial support for the children’s art programs, including scholarships, materials, instructor fees and snacks.

An active community volunteer organization has been an integral part of Atlantic Center’s operations since its inception. Organized by Mildred Coyner in the late 1970s, volunteer trademarks include sparkling creativity, limitless (and enviable) energy, passionate commitment and a spirit of service that inspires new members every year.

In the early ‘90s, a large corps of the volunteers began dedicating their efforts to the children’s art programs, carried out at ACA’s Community Art Center in downtown New Smyrna Beach, Harris House, naming themselves the Harris House League. League members, of all ages and diverse backgrounds, share a common commitment to furthering the growth of the arts in our community.

Volunteers are vital to the daily operations of Atlantic Center through work in various areas including: Gallery, Clerical, Education, Hospitality, Creative Projects, and Fundraising Assistance. Volunteers play an active role in two major events – IMAGES: A Festival of the Arts, a two-day outdoor art festival held in February, and Horsin’ Around, a silent and live auction held in early April, as well as run their own creative fundraisers throughout the year, such as Garage Sales, a Fashion Show, Dessert Auctions, and more!

The Harris House League hosts meetings every month for members and potential members, and publishes a monthly newsletter. An annual Volunteer Recognition event is held every January, hosted by the Atlantic Center staff.

Volunteers may opt to become members of the Harris House League. If so, members are required to provide 36 hours of service per calendar year in an activity or on a committee of their choice. Volunteers pay annual League dues ($15) that entitle them to discounts on program admissions and gift shop purchases. They also can participate in a special membership with ACA where their HHL dues are paid with the individual membership ($40). However, volunteers who just want to help out without becoming League members are welcome to do so.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please download and fill out the form, send to or contact Jim Zock, at 386-427-6975.
